BIOGRAPHY
Jay R. Weneta is an American filmmaker based in Los Angeles.
Inspired at a young age by the passion and ingenuity of the filmmakers who’ve come before him, Jay saw film as an opportunity to convey his feelings and imagination into an art form. His work is rooted in the belief that the raw material of cinema comes from our unconscious subjectivity, that fiction reveals what reality hides, and how this can be channeled into expressing human truths/experiences through cinematic spectacles.
His directorial body of work includes music videos for artists like Baby Keem, Skrillex, John Legend, Lil Uzi Vert, Skylar Grey, Chvrches, Yung Bleu, Poo Bear, Nija Charles, Johnny Yukon, and commercial spots for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, CBS This Morning, UCLA Football, the PAC-12 Sports Network, the Rose Bowl Stadium, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and UCLA Woman’s Basketball, as well as works including treatment writing, visual research, and creative conception in collaboration with Dave Meyers for artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Coldplay, Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, Travis Scott, Drake, Taylor Swift, Janet Jackson, Anderson . Paak, Imagine Dragons, Justin Timberlake, Ed Sheeran, Normani, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, and more.
Before his work in the film industry, Jay was a collegiate athlete for UCLA Football as a Division 1 Longsnapper and a graduate of the UCLA School of Film and Television. While still in school, Jay fell under the mentorship of director Catherine Hardwicke, a life-changing experience that led to him pivoting into filmmaking full-time. Early industry experience after that found him working for Robert Redford and Radical Media before collaborating under Dave Meyers on countless music videos and commercial spots. His time working with Dave brought him invaluable insight into the process of filmmaking that eventually pushed him onto the path of directing himself.
Jay is now continuing his efforts in music videos and commercials while working to expand into creating cinematic narrative-focused content.
